Seminar on Ice Particle Radar Observations at TU Delft

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dmitri Moisseev, PHARA advisory board member and leading expert in radar meteorology, will present a seminar titled “Linking Ice Particle Properties and Radar Observations” at TU Delft’s Department of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences on February 25th 2025.

Prof. Moisseev, from the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research at the University of Helsinki, heads the radar meteorology group, where his research focuses on the measurement and characterization of winter precipitation using both ground and spaceborne radar systems.

In this seminar, he will provide insights into the state-of-the-art methodologies for computing radar signatures of ice particles. A key focus will be on the limitations of the so-called “soft-spheroid” approximation for modeling ice particle scattering properties. While previously considered a good approximation for modeling such particles, recent findings challenge its accuracy. Prof. Moisseev will illustrate these findings using multi-frequency radar observations, discussing the associated errors and their implications for radar-based precipitation retrievals.
